Dental Cleaning Q & A

Why do I need a professional dental cleaning and exam?

Not only does our dental hygienist remove the plaque, stains and calculus from your teeth left behind after brushing, but both our hygiene team and Dr. Lin look for signs of gum disease and decay .  Regular dental cleanings and exams are recommended to maintain a healthy smile.

How often do I have to have my teeth cleaned?

Some people may be able to maintain their dental health with semi-annual dental cleanings. Dr. Brent Lin and his hygiene team may sometimes recommend a more frequent cleaning scheduled based on your personal dental needs.

What is Periodontal disease or gum disease?

Gum disease, or periodontal disease is an inflammation and/ or infection of the gums and bone that supports the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease/ gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.  Periodontal disease has been linked to many  health issues such as cardiovascular disease, bone health, diabetes and various systemic diseases.

What is root planing and scaling?

If you have periodontal disease, Dr. Brent Lin D.D.S. may recommend deep cleaning sometimes referred to as root planing and scaling. Root planing and scaling treatment is designed to remove the calculus and bacteria below the gum line.

What is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance is a procedure following root planing and scaling. Your hygienist may recommend this treatment 3-4 times per year.  This procedure is not the same as a regular cleaning. During a periodontal maintenance procedure, also known as supportive periodontal treatment our hygiene team will closely monitor your periodontal health and go over your home care. Our goals is to help you achieve a healthy smile.
