Crowns Q & A

What is a dental crown?

A crown protects your tooth when it’s damaged by encasing the entire tooth to help prevent further erosion. It can also disguise a discolored tooth by restoring the appearance of the natural tooth. Teeth that are weakened by decay or extremely large fillings are at risk of breaking unless they're strengthened with a crown.

Dr. Lin makes porcelain crowns that look and function like your original tooth with the strength of a metal crown. The crown can be made either in-office or by a dental lab. Dr. Lin has undertaken specialized training and is certified in E4D laser scanning for creating custom crowns.

Single-visit crowns are an in-office, same-day crown service. Your dentist will use E4D scanning and imaging tools to model and create a custom crown. E4D provides grinding and milling hardware so that crown can be made sometimes while you wait. The final zirconia crowns are sintered and glazed for a personalized fit and shine for a natural looking restoration.

Why would I need a dental crown?

Crowns provide effective treatment for a number of conditions, including:

  • Covering dental implants
  • Attaching bridges
  • Covering badly shaped teeth
  • Protecting a cracked or weakened teeth
  • Restoring broken teeth
  • Covering discolored teeth
  • Reinforcing teeth after a root canal

Crowns strengthen your teeth and improve their appearance, giving you a more attractive smile and helping you preserve your natural teeth for as long as possible.

How do I care for my dental crown?

Once Dr. Lin fits your crown, look after it by:

  • Brushing and flossing every day
  • Avoiding hard foods and candies
  • Avoiding grinding or clenching your teeth

Crowns protect and strengthen your teeth, but they don’t make your teeth immune to further damage or decay. If you don’t take care of your crown, the bonding may start to loosen and allow plaque and bacteria inside. This can make your tooth vulnerable to decay and infection.
